Description – L-tyrosine is one form of the amino acid tyrosine. Tyrosine is present in all tissues of the human body and in most of its fluids. It helps the body produce enzymes, thyroid hormones, and the skin pigment melanin. It also helps the body produce neurotransmitters that helps nerve cells communicate. Tyrosine is particularly important in the production of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine.
Function – L-Tyrosine is given as a supplement to increase L-Tyrosine levels in people with Phenylketouria (or PKU). L-Tyrosine has been used in alternative medicine as a possibly effective aid in improving mental performance, alertness, or memory. L-Tyrosine has also been used to treat depression or attention deficit disorder (ADD or ADHD).
